With
unprecedented access to one of the most insular and secretive
countries on Earth, this film follows Bezad, a charismatic
& highly articulate Qashqa'i nomad on his spectacular 500km
migration across Iran. Seen through the eyes of this humble
mountain shepherd, the documentary challenges entrenched preconceptions
and reveals a side of Iran almost never seen in the west.
Once
feared throughout ancient Persia, the Qashqa'i are an unruly
tribe of nomads that still inhabit the mountains of South
Western Iran. Despite the gradual attrition of their territories
and power, they remain a proud and defiant people with a strong
sense of identity and tradition. Resisting relentless pressure
from the government to give up their nomadic lifestyle, they
have tenaciously clung to their own language, music, dance
and dress -and a unique culture which has at its heart one
of the oldest, most authentic and dramatic human migrations
still in existence today. It is this journey which forms the
backbone of the film.
Iran
once had the greatest population of nomads in the world, now
Bezad is one of the very last nomads still living this extraordinary
way of life. His life is hard, he walks the mountains all
day, survives on a meagre diet, sleeps little and spends every
night under the stars, yet his good humour and supreme confidence
never falter. Bezad is a highly entertaining character whose
colourful stories of surviving on the margins of Iranian society
will stimulate and engage viewers from any culture. With Bezad
as our guide this film will bring viewers on an incredible
journey and open a completely new perspective on a country
and people who now find themselves the focus of world attention
for all the wrong reasons. attention for all the wrong reasons.
