"John
Murray and Brian Hayes hauled their non-too-light cameras
up some 26000 feet to bring back this beautiful and quite
remarkable
film of the first successful Irish ascent of Everest. It was
a film which caught
not only the hardship and the hard work and the courage involved
but also
something of the philosophy which attracts people
to a place like Everest."
Brendan
Glacken, The Irish Times
A
remarkable one-hour documentary on the successful ascent of
the formidable and seldom climbed north-east ridge of Mount
Everest by an Irish team in the Spring of 1993. Filmed in
remote and beautiful Tibet, it is a story of courage, strength
and determination set against the awesome size and danger
of Everest.
In a testimony to North-South cooperation, the Irish climbing
team was drawn from both sides of the border. Dawson Stelfox,
the summiteer, holds both an Irish and British passport, making
him the first Irishman to climb Everest and the first Briton
to climb the north-east ridge, the same route Mallory and
Irvine disappeared on in the 1920's.
